Green Harbor water caused by thermal inversion

Green water in the Harbor caused by thermal inversion - June 26, 2012

June 27, 2012

We're received a lot of questions about what's turning the Harbor water green this week. Our current understanding is that the Harbor is undergoing thermal inversion. Basically, the water in the Harbor got very warm last week and then as temperatures dropped the surface of the water cooled faster than water on the bottom. This warm water then began to rise bringing algae, sediment, and nutrients up from the bottom and causing the strange coloration in the water.
